CNY SHRM Continues Partnership with Southwest Community Service: Join Us This Fall!

Once again, the CNY SHRM Diversity and Workforce Readiness Committee will be partnering with the South West Community Center (SWCC) to provide Career Counseling to students in 5th and 6th Grade.  Our inaugural volunteer initiative last Spring was a success and we hope that you will consider joining us to volunteer in the latter part of October 2014.  We hope to expand our volunteer efforts in this important and rewarding community outreach.  The time commitment is approximately 2 hours in the late afternoon.  If you are interested in volunteering, please call or email Nicki Arnett-Burke at 315-374-7658 or [email protected].  Stay tuned for further details!!

There is Still Time to Register for the September Manager Training Event!

You already know the importance of educating your line supervisors and managers on the do’s and don’ts of employee relations and employment law.  You know that a lack of information on the basics of employment law can lead your supervisor to say and do things (or fail to do things) that create liability for your organization. But finding the time to sit down and teach these concepts is a challenge.

On Thursday, September 25, let CNY SHRM do the training for you! “Employment Law Basics for Supervisors, Managers and Business Owners” will be directed not at you, the HR professional, but your line supervisors and managers.  Bring your key supervisors and managers!  Or, attend yourself, and take notes on all the things you should take back to your organization to train your managers.

At this comprehensive 2 hour session, Kristen Smith, Esq. and Kseniya Premo, Esq., of Bond, Schoeneck & King, PLLC, will cover wage and hour issues, discrimination and harassment basics, performance management tips, and the challenges of leave and attendance issues.

Network the Old-Fashioned Way:  Introducing CNY SHRM Happy Hour!

NetworkingLinkedIn and other online networking tools are great, but nothing replaces old-fashioned, in-person networking for building relationships within the community.  With that in mind, CNY SHRM is introducing a new event: CNY SHRM Networking Night.  Stop by Sharkey’s in Liverpool on October 21 between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. to grab an informal bite to eat, have a drink on CNY SHRM, and spend some time with HR colleagues in the area. No formal registration is required, but to help us plan, please RSVP to [email protected].  Watch your e-mail for reminders!

Certification: The Latest Update

We continue to receive updates and webcasts from both National SHRM and HRCI regarding the certifications specific to each organization.  New information is available weekly.  The opinions on which route to take are as varied as the individuals giving them.

The decision of what to do with your certification is truly your own.  Do your homework, gain as much understanding about each of the certifications, then decide which certification fits best for you.

Those professionals who already have the PHR or SPHR can take an on-line SHRM tutorial (at no cost), and get the new SHRM certification along with your PHR or SPHR.  You have until January 2015 to take the tutorial.

For more information, check out  www.Shrmcertification.org and www.hrci.org.

A Word From the Marketing Committee

KeyThe CNY SHRM Marketing Committee, comprised of Chair Jim Jerose with Jill Sheffler and Matt Kuczek, most recently worked closely with the Program Committee to secure sponsorships for the June 20th Annual All-Day Conference at the Doubletree. Revenue from such sponsorships helps our Chapter with organizational expenses and other needs, and brings to our attention contemporary HR-related products and services. The sponsors enjoy significant time with the attendees, and every sponsor commented positively on the quality of the venue and conversations held. If you attended, thank you for making our Sponsors feel welcomed and their offerings valued.

We are now looking at supporting the Fall Programs with targeted sponsorships that are aligned with the topics CNY SHRM is offering. Our next major event requiring a variety of sponsorships, prize donations and other support will be our Annual December Program and Holiday Celebration to be held at the Doubletree on December 9th. For this event, our Committee will be working closely with the Membership Committee led by Chairman Dan Higham. Membership is traditionally the organizer of the Holiday program and event.

You can assist both Committees with the identification of potential sponsors and raffle prize donors. When you refer such leads to either Committee we perform all of the contact and follow up tasks. Referrals can be to [email protected]  or [email protected].

Our sponsors enjoy being with CNY SHRM members, so when you attend one of our programs please make an effort to visit with them. The product or service they represent might be just what you have been looking for!
