CONFERENCE SCHEDULE:

Breakfast Keynote Session: Legal Update

Kristen Smith, Esq

The updates in 2022 continue at a fast and furious pace, with things like more questions with paid leaves and a flurry of legal challenges keeping us on our toes. But legislatures have also begun to shift their focus to non-COVID-related areas as well as we saw significant developments in whistleblower protections, privacy surveillance, and how and when to drop and increase restrictions, just to name a few! In this session, we’ll review the important updates from the end of 2022 to 2022, but we’ll also take a look ahead at what we can expect during the rest of the year. Please join us for a legal update session you won’t want to miss!

Two Concurrent Break-out Sessions:  (10:15 – 11:15 am)

Concurrent Session I – FMLA Deep Dive and Absence Management

Dr. Theresa Roma

The fundamentals and basics of FMLA are explained, and an overview of employer and employee responsibilities. How this integrates with State Mandated policies and the ways to manage it.

Concurrent Session II - Talent Management - An economists take on DEI, Race, Gender, and Representation in Various Occupations

Jonathan Link Logan

The talent landscape is tough, to say the least, and to respond to the challenge, HR professionals are reimagining talent acquisition strategies and deploying a variety of new tactics and technologies. Join us as we discuss what current race and gender trends in occupations currently look like. This deep look at what representation looks like in major occupation groups can help to highlight how and why HR managers should continue to seek new and different ways to recruit untapped talent.

Two Concurrent Break-out Sessions:  (11:30 am – 12:30 pm)

Concurrent Session I – Ethical Standards and Personal Credibility

Loretta Farrell-Kuhland

Ethical standards & personal credibility are interdependent aspects of HR practice and competencies. It is difficult to imagine one without the other. Topics include: How an organization defines and communicates the ethical practice,  how HR can ensure consistency and transparency application of policies and practices, understanding different perspectives that impact views on and implementation of ethical practice, approaches HR practitioners can use to manage pressures that compromise ethical practice, e.g.: differences between personal & organizational ethical practice; techniques to apply when a decision ‘doesn’t feel right, and approaches to building credibility with managers, employees, and senior leadership.

Concurrent Session II – Talent Management: The Skills Gap

Curtis Woody

SHRM’s research finds that 8 out of 10 HR professionals report that high-demand and soft skills are in short supply. Employers need workers with the hard skills to perform jobs in technology, manufacturing, data analysis, and other 21st century careers. And they need workers with the soft skills to communicate well, empathize with co-workers, and lead their teams.  These presentations delve into the why of our current skills shortage dilemma and the how of closing the gaps, including partnering with K-12 education, expanding training innovations like apprenticeships, tapping into underutilized talent pools, and leveraging HR to play a key policy leadership role.

Lunch Keynote Session - LGBTQ+ Etiquette, Common Bloopers, and How to Mess Up Properly

Jeannie Gainsburg

What are some outdated LGBTQ+ terms that I shouldn’t use? Should I share my pronouns if they’re obvious? Is queer an okay word to use now? What should I do when I accidentally mess up someone’s name or pronouns? LGBTQ+ terms, identities, and cultures are constantly changing. It’s difficult to keep up. Many people feel intimidated by all the changes and are silenced by the fear that they will accidentally say something that will offend someone. This presentation answers these questions, relieves this anxiety, and more. Participants will leave with a list of the most common LGBTQ+ etiquette bloopers, better language suggestions, best-practice communication tips, pointers on how to mess up properly, and increased confidence in their ability to have respectful interactions with and about LGBTQ+ colleagues, clients, family members, and friends. Allies can create safer spaces with their language choices and this presentation shows them how.

Closing Key Note Session:  (3:00 pm – 4:15 pm)

Adrienne Schleigh

Waving the White Flag: Declaring A Truce In The War On Talent. This presentation will be about implementing best practices in retention and engagement, in a way that is sustainable for companies of all sizes.  Additionally ending the war between hiring managers and talent acquisition by focusing on mutual success together.
